The idea to set up Singapore-MIT Alliance was first mooted in 1997. A year later, the first MOU for the Alliance was inked. The resounding success of that first phase paved the way for a second, more ambitious phase, dubbed SMA-2, launched in July 2005. In this issue, we take a quick look at how the Alliance has fared in the past decade.

SMA student Le Thi Nguyet Minh was honoured with the American Society for Cell Biology Worthington Predoctoral Travel Award last December. Minh was singled out as one of the five top-ranked students to receive the award which was supported by the Worthington Biochemistry Corporation based on her abstract on microRNA functional study in neuronal differentiation, overcoming students from other top universities including Carnegie Mellon University.



The SMA Alumni Club's latest President Stanley Su (MST DM, 2008) talks to SMA Connect about his memories of those student days, as well as his varied interests. He also outlines his plans for SMAAC.



SMA AMM&NS researchers have filed for a patent on ‘Insulated Nanogap Devices and Methods of Use Thereof’. SMA Connect found out more about the nanogap devices that are meant to detect DNA molecules rapidly and inexpensively.



Postdoc relishes MIT research experience
