The MEBCS Award Ceremony was held on 15 December 2005, 11.30am, at the Centre for Instructional Technology (CIT), NUS. The ceremony was held to recognise and reward MEBCS students who have topped their cohort in the categories of academic work and performance in the MEBCS Industrial Immersion (II) programme. The II programme is modelled after the Industrial Internship programme conducted by the MIT Practice School, and is a unique feature of the MEBCS curriculum. The MEBCS-II programme has been well supported by local industries, which sponsor prizes and awards to students who perform well. The prizes for the MEBCS Award Ceremony conducted in 2005 were sponsored by Merck Sharp & Dohme (S) Ltd (MSC). Herriyanto Ronny Sondjaja and Li Wei, both MEBCS students, each received a cheque worth $500 from Mr Ong See Hee, the Finance Associate Director of MSC. Herriyanto received the award for Best Student in the II programme, and Li Wei, for Best Masters of Science (SM) Student in the MEBCS programme.

SMA conducted a series of roadshows in China, Vietnam, India and Malaysia during September and October 2005 in a concerted effort to recruit talented students who can meet the rigorous admission standards of the Alliance Universities. Prof Chua Soo Jin, SMA Deputy Director, made presentations on the SMA Programmes and degrees offered and spoke on the privileges of a world-class education at SMA. The briefings were coupled with informal chat sessions with potential candidates.
The roadshows attracted a substantial number of students totaling 279 in China, where the events were held in Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou. There were 151 students attending the events in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai in India, 135 students in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and 67 students in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Bahru in Malaysia.

To many students, SMA stands for So Many Assignments. The fact is, however, SMA is not just about study, research and assignments. Leisure and family play an important part in our students’ lives too. One of our SMA students, Shawn Choo Sheng Wen from the Computational Engineering (CE) programme, got married on 7 January 2006 at the Paya Lebar Mehodist Church. Family, relatives and friends gathered to celebrate the special day. The wedding dinner was held at the Regent Hotel on 11 January 2006 before Shawn went off with his wife, Yimin, for a honeymoon in Japan and Boston. |
