SMA hosts lunch in honour of outgoing and incoming Co-Directors
In July SMA hosted lunch to bid farewell to Prof Ng Wun Jern, the outgoing SMA Co-Director and also to welcome Prof Hardy Chan who has since replaced Prof Ng.

SMA researchers develop new method to seperate living and dead cells
Hard work and perservance paid off for a group of students from the Innovation in Manufacturing Systems and Technology programme, who discovered the Moving Dielectrophoresis technique, a new method to seperate living and dead yeast cells simultaneously.
An Advancement in Communication: The High Carrier Injection Optical Waveguide Switch
Highlights of a patented breakthrough achievement by the Advanced Materials for Micro- and Nano Systems programme - the invention of a semiconductor device that connects any two persons in a communication system using the phenomenon of total internal refraction.
A day of fun for SMA students and alumni
In July 2006, students and alumni of SMA had an enjoyable day out that sparked off with a lively bowling tournament and ended with a delightful dinner of mouth-watering BBQ delicacies.

Accomplished SMA graduates at NTU Convocation 2006
Recently, four talented SMA students received their PhD and MEng degrees at the NTU Convocation ceremony, which was presided over by His Excellency President S R Nathan.

SMA plays ice-breaker to new students
Every year, SMA organises orientation sessions for its new students, to give them a warm welcome to the Alliance as well as encourage greater interaction with each other. This year's orientation was held from 29 June to 1 July 2006, and was full of various thrilling and enriching activities.

Open House on Computation and Systems Biology
As part of the SMA Industry-Research Institute Liaison (SMA IRI) initiative, the Computation and Systems Biology programme held a one-day long Open House to further enhance the links between industry and academia.

SMA Student Recruitment Roadshows 2006
In September 2006, the SMA team in Singapore conducted recruitment roadshows at some universities and institutes in Malaysia and India. The roadshows attracted many students who showed great enthusiasm to know more about the Singapore-MIT Alliance's programmes.

Mini-Symposium on Computational Engineering for Biotechnology and Nanotechnology
About 70 students, academics, researchers and industry participants attended this event helped the attendees increase their awareness of the latest research happenings and also created opportunities for greater interaction between MIT and Singapore.


Summer Course on Mechanics of Inorganic and Organic Thin Films The Advanced Materials for Micro-Nano Systems programme held a week-long course on ‘Mechanics of Inorganic and Organic Thin Films and Small-Volume Structures from 10-14 July 2006 for students from NUS and NTU and researchers and engineers from research institutes.

Talented SMA graduates at NUS Commencement 2006

66 SMA graduates received their Masters and PhD degrees at the National University of Singapore on 6 July 2006. The event was presided over by Pro-Chancellor Dr Andrew Chew and graced by some prominent personalities such as Prime Minister Mr Lee Hsien Loong, Minister Mentor Mr Lee Kuan Yew and Minister for Education Mr TharmanShanmugaratnam.
