The Management and Staff of SMA hosted an Appreciation Lunch for the Governing Board Chairman, Prof Shih Choon Fong, who will be leaving end of November 2008 to take up his new post as Founding President at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Saudi Arabia.
2008 intake

On the morning of 27 June 2008, 76 new students arrived punctually at NUS Lecture Theatre 6 for a two-day orientation programme. The students were not only briefed on academic policies, administrative and student matters, but also had fun participating in the Sports Challenge. Read about it here.

Dr Roy Chew

Dr Roy Chew Han Guan (AMM&NS PhD, 2008) landed a coveted position in one of the world’s top semiconductor foundries even before he graduated. SMA Connect speaks with Roy to find out more about his current research interests.

2D Nanofluidic Array

An SMA CE team has proposed a low-cost method to fabricate a nanofluidic device with polymers. Their proposed technique uses the more conventional and lower-cost photolithography process. Get the preview here.

Microbial production of metal nanoparticles

Green Factories to Produce Nanogold and Nanosilver

SMA MEBCS researchers successfully used a species of fungus and an algae type to biologically form complex nanostructures. Nanomaterials are seen to have great future potential in influencing daily life but are challenging to produce due to their stringent production requirements.

Rapid Immune Response

With the help of computational methods, CSB scientists have found how proteins in our immune systems ‘collaborate’ to sense invading pathogens. Their discovery could revolutionise how drugs work against infectious agents in future.

Touring the NUS Nano Biomechanics Lab

AMM&NS held its 3rd Summer Short Course on 9 – 13 July 2008, scoring a first with participation from an A*STAR research institute, the institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE).
